Just a shot through the water into a collection of shells that I found interesting. No Photoshop wizardry here. The distortions are real.

hummm, interesting... I have mixed feelings with this one: I like the idea, composition, etc, but I'm bothered by the fact of not being able to see the shells in crisp detail... Maybe that's a good thing after all.

@Condemna: First off, thank you for your comments, I appreciate your opinions. For me, this image is what it is. Some shells in a tidal pool shot through the water at sunset. In these days of digital photography, Photoshop and HDR, I offer an image that just is what it is. I enjoy it for what it is. I enjoy it for its natural rather than digitally manipulated aberrations. I think I initially felt like you did. Then I just kept looking at it and realized it is a pretty honest image and for that I love it. I in no whay mean to diminish your opinion at all and I take it and of course will ponder it. I just wanted to present my own opinion. Thank you again.

Presenting an image that is - for some at least - not perfect, is honest photography. You capture the scene 'as is' and thats good. Did you find any pearls..?

@Observing: No pearls, but in between different shots I think I ate some lapas (limpets).

Hi, thanks for your articulated answer. Let me explain myself better (if I can). When I said "bothered by not being able to see the shells in crisp detail", and don't imply that there is any technical problem with the image or that the image should actually show these details. It's purely a "gut sensation": the fact that I can't focus my sight on the shell and sand details unsettles me, there is nowhere I can easily "attach to" in the photo. But this in itself is probably a good thing because, at the very least, it makes me think about the photo and beyond the photo. Besides, there is a "fluidness" to the photo that is very well transmitted. On the other hand, I don't fully agree with the idea that obtaining the same effect with photoshop would diminish its value: in my opinion it's the final impression you are able to transmit to the viewer what matters most; the way you get to the desired result is more a technical issue that an artistic one. That said, I admit that besides cropping, spot healing and converting to B&W... I don't use photoshop for many other things...

@Condemna: Thank you again for another great comment. There should be more exchanges like this on Aminus. So often the exchanges are limited to "Great shot", "Nice shot", etc. You do explain yourself well and it is in line with what I thought about the image myself. I think it kind of forces you to start looking for different things in the image. Don't get me wrong, I don't think this photo is any great artistic or technical achievement, I just like it for reasons I stated in my first response. Also, I will still hold to my opinion about an image being more honest if it is captured as shown rather than being manufactured. However, I do agree that it does not diminish its artistic value. In the end "art" is the implied "value" we place on an image because of the way it effects us emotionally. How we get from A to Z is of little consequence.

Bravo for posting what you saw rather than what you could create! Those lively exchanges, above, are sadly missing from most 'blogs. If something had been floating on the water surface/plane of focus - anything! - we would all be saying "love those shells under the water"!

Sometimes photos aren't 'played' with are more realistic... as fun as it is to play around with photos... these can be just as fun... great work... love it...
